Milton resident issues 9/11 challenge
September 08, 2011 MILTON, Ga. - Tammi Kimsey has thrown down the gauntlet and issued a challenge to the residents of Milton – fly your flag on Sept. 11. Initially, Kimsey wanted her neighbors in the Avensong subdivision to take part. But that wasn't enough. "After thinking about it more, I decided that I didn't want to just see Avensong accept this challenge, I wanted to see the entire city of Milton accept it," Kimsey said. "Ten years ago, in the days after Sept. 11 happened, I remember how almost every home had their American flag flying proudly to show their patriotism and the solidarity our country had," said Kimsey. " I remember the feeling of pride I had seeing so many flags. And I want to honor the almost 3,000 who lost their lives on Sept. 11 in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania." Now, 10 years later, Kimsey's son-in-law, Lt. Paul Christian Ritter, is serving overseas in the Navy, and his deployment has caused him to be largely absent for his newborn daughter's life. "He has missed out on all of her 'firsts,'" Kimsey said. "The first time she rolled over, first time she started crawling, first tooth and she's very close to her first steps." For all that time, his wife – Kimsey's daughter, Nicole, a Milton High School graduate -- has had to raise the child alone at their home in Washington state. "I want to honor Christian's service to our country, and the service of the millions of men and women who voluntarily agree to put their lives and the lives of their families on hold, and are willing to go into harm's way in some of the most hostile environments, to keep a 9/11 from ever happening again," Kimsey said. "On the anniversary of that horrible day, let's honor those that lost their lives, as well as all the military men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, during the fight against al-Qaeda in both Iraq and Afghanistan so that we can all feel safe here in the U.S," she said. "Let's have every home fly their American flag with the same pride they did 10 years ago." Rivers Alive in Milton Oct. 16
MILTON, GA., Oct. 5, 2010 - Milton's "Rivers Alive" waterways cleanup, education and protection program will take place Saturday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Milton Grows Green Committee (MGG) is co-sponsoring the event with Bailey Farm & Gardens, Inc., which has been involved with the project for 13 years. Rivers Alive 2010 will kick off from its traditional location at Bailey Farm & Gardens, 255 Hickory Flat Road, one mile west of the Birmingham Crossroads. Click here for directions. Click here to see a flyer for the event. Everyone, regardless of age, is welcome. Depending on age and capabilities, volunteers will be assigned to predetermined local waterways to remove debris deposited from upstream and left by passers-by. Waders and boots will be a plus for those who want to get in the river. For younger participants there will be an opportunity to apply storm drain markers in a local neighborhood. The "Drains to Streams" marking program is part of the Georgia Clean Water Campaign and is also designed to remind everyone of the connection between what goes down storm drains and the quality of drinking water. Jack Lindon, MGG's coordinator for this event, urges volunteers to wear appropriate shoes with good traction, as the banks are slippery. "We're always pleased by the growing number of hard-working volunteers, both children and adults, who show up to help," said Bill Bailey of Bailey Farm and Gardens. The Rivers Alive Cleanup is a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn more about our Coosa River watershed and help improve the quality of our drinking water. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources through local waterway cleanup events that include streams, rivers, lakes, beaches and wetlands. It is an outreach program of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. More information is available at www.riversalive.org. ABOUT THE MILTON GROWS GREEN COMMITTEE MGG coordinates the efforts of individual volunteers and community-based organizations through the efforts of its own members, including Milton residents, business partners and those with an interest in the environment in Milton. City of Milton offers fitness camps
City of Milton offers fitness camps Three sessions available three times a week starting Oct. 18 MILTON, GA., Sept. 22, 2010 - The City of Milton Parks and Recreation Department has teamed with Milton-based CorePhysique to offer affordable fitness camps to residents looking for a healthier lifestyle. The camps, offered in three separate sessions three times a week, will take place at Milton's Bell Memorial Park, 15245 Bell Park Road, starting Oct. 18. They will be taught by Milton resident and mother of three Kolleen Riddick, a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist. "These camps are safe, effective and they will kick your booty," said Riddick. "The first thing I do is physical assessments. I then tailor the camp to each person's specific needs, so you are not going to get hurt." For Milton residents, the four week camps (12 full sessions) will be offered at a special rate of $90. For non-residents the cost rises to $120. The price includes an informational booklet and personal fitness journal, nutrition coaching and enrollment in one of three camps: Early Riser: 5:45 a.m. Just Right: 7 a.m. Late Riser: 9:15 a.m. Please note that camps are limited to just 30 participants per session. However, the City of Milton and CorePhysique are seeking to establish additional camps as demand requires. A great value - just $7.50 per 45-minute session - each camp includes a warm-up and workout that combines strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility exercises. In addition, Riddick educates participants with articles and information on fitness, health issues and more. "In just a few short weeks I have noticed a huge difference," said Tracey Hosmer, a previous fitness camper. "I have gotten much stronger, I am smarter about the types of food I eat, I have so much more energy and my clothes fit better." City of Milton unveils new Web site
MILTON, GA., Aug. 30, 2010 - The City of Milton today unveiled a new Web site at www.cityofmiltonga.us. The new site, which boasts a bevy of features and options for residents looking to connect with their community and city government, is the culmination of months of work and planning involving every city department. "This has been a very big job. I think the citizens of Milton will like what they see," said Communications Manager Jason Wright. "We tried to open the doors of every department via the Web site, and hopefully our residents and business owners will appreciate the difference." Users will notice big changes right off the bat, with a new layout and fresh photos - many of which were donated by residents - gracing the front page. To see a slide show of donated photos used in the Web site, click here. Wright said the Web site is built with ease of use in mind. On the front page, there is now a search function, an "I want to" drop down menu taking users to the most popular site features and an interactive calendar. These three options are also available on every interior page. "We didn't want users to have to 'drill down' very far to get needed information for our most common questions," Wright said. "If, for instance, you want a special event permit, are interested in a zoning case or want to pay your taxes, it's all right there on every page." Inside, users will find expanded pages with full department head biographies, complete listings of staff with contact information and comprehensive information about everything the City of Milton's government oversees, including the trail plan, comprehensive plan and transportation projects. But that's not all. There are also new maps, updated permit applications, membership rosters for volunteer boards and much, much more. And that's not to mention the full menu of social media options now available for residents - Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and an RSS feed. All will be updated regularly with vital city information, so sign up and plug in. To visit the City of Milton's new Web site, simply type in the same address you have always used - www.cityofmiltonga.us. If you have any questions about the new site, contact Wright at 678-242-2523 or by e-mail at jason.wright@cityofmiltonga.us. Milton named "Tree City USA"
MILTON, GA., Feb. 19, 2010 - Milton is one of the few municipalities in Georgia to be named a "Tree City USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation, an honor City Council celebrated at its Feb. 17 regularly scheduled meeting. The honor comes as a result of the hard work of the Milton Tree Preservation Committee and city Arborist Mark Law.
The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs.
Milton is one of only 130 cities is the state to be awarded the distinction, and one of only 3,400 nationwide. As part of the honor, Law traveled to the Gold Dome Feb. 18 to watch Gov. Sonny Perdue sign his Arbor Day Proclamation.
Incorporated on December 1, 2006, the City of Milton is a distinctive community that embraces small-town life and heritage while preserving and enhancing the city's rural character. Milton approves Deerfield Green plan
After multiple deferrals and a lot of work from builder Bowen Family Homes, city staff and concerned community members, City Council approved Dec. 7 a modified site plan for the Deerfield Green townhouse community at the corner of Webb and Morris Roads.
Bowen wanted the city to approve dozens of units with front entry garages instead of the rear-entry models approved by Fulton County in 2005.
A retaining wall on the property made it impossible to build the rear-entry units with enough space for residents to safely get into and out of their garages, company spokesman Corbitt Woods said.
However, city staff and community volunteers said that would change the look of the neighborhood to the detriment of the area. So the plan was sent back to the drawing board in November.
Community Development Director Tom Wilson said he recommended the new plan hammered out by everyone because it reflected community concerns and mitigated the visual effects.
“This does everything possible to screen those garages,” said Wilson.
As part of the plan, units 136 to 163 will have the front-entry garages. Of those, 18 will be set back 20 feet from the end of the sidewalk to ensure drivers can park entirely within their driveway and not hang over into the walking area. The rest will be set back 18 feet.
In addition, Bowen will plant landscaping near the homes to shield the front-entry models from passers-by.
The plan was approved 5-0, with councilwomen Karen Thurman and Tina D’Aversa absent.
“I think this was a good exercise in working together,” said Mayor Joe Lockwood.

Recycle your election signs in support of a greener Milton!
The recent election season was more spirited than ever, and colorful campaign signs still dot our yards and roadways. But with the elections over, now it’s time to pick up our signs. American Recycling, a subsidiary of Waste Pro, USA, is providing a quick and easy way for residents to dispose of their campaign signs and be environmentally responsible at the same time. If you’re not planning to return your campaign signs to the candidate you supported or retain them for your own use, simply drop them off at any of the city’s three fire stations by Friday, Nov. 13. American Recycling will pick up the signs for recycling at no cost to the city. We thank American Recycling for their partnership and generosity to the city, and we thank you for helping keep Milton green and beautiful.

Under a privately owned, covered horse arena on a cold and rainy October night, Milton's six City Council candidates in the Nov. 3 elections squared off in a debate that has promised to be an election tradition.
But a few in the crowd thought bland questions didn't allow the candidates to differentiate themselves.
More than 100 people showed up to Shannondale Farms Oct. 15 to watch the "Milton People's Forum," which featured questions on building a "live, work, play environment" in Milton, gating Crooked Creek and growth over the next decade. Also covered were taxes, building a public horse arena, public safety staffing levels, traffic congestion, a new Milton County and recreational trails.

Despite recent flooding, Milton’s Rivers Alive waterways cleanup, education and protection program will go on as scheduled Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Milton Grows Green is co-sponsoring the event with Bailey Farm & Gardens, Inc., which has been involved with the project in what is now Milton for the past 10 years. The event will kick off from its traditional location at Bailey Farms & Gardens, 255 Hickory Flat Road near the Birmingham Crossroads.
As a result of the recent floods and heavy rains earlier this week, the organizers are eliminating some streams from the lineup for safety reasons. “Little River is certainly too swift, and much or all of Chicken Creek may be too treacherous, depending on whether we keep getting more rain,” said Bill Bailey, the Company’s CEO. Jon McPhail, one of the co-chairs of MGG, underlined that concern: “Safety is our primary concern. There will be plenty of tasks for all the people who come out without putting anybody in harm’s way. We have monitored stream levels all week and are still reaching out to owners of additional possible sites for stream-side cleanup.”
The volunteers will have opportunities to learn about watershed systems through an Environscape interactive model showing water movement over the landscape, into tributaries and streams. There will also be rain barrel displays, and the Fire Department will present safety tips and the ever-popular fire clowns. Some of the volunteers will then be dispersed to neighborhoods for marking storm drains to prevent pollution from finding its way into the streams, and preventing blockage of the stormwater system that can cause or aggravate flooding. Others will be assigned to appropriate streams for streamside cleanup. Jack Lindon, MGG’s coordinator for this event, urges volunteers to wear appropriate shoes with good traction, as the banks are extra slippery because of the recent high water.
MGG coordinates the efforts of individual volunteers and community-based organizations through the efforts of its own members, who include Milton residents, business partners and those with an interest in the environment in Milton. Rivers Alive is a volunteer cleanup event that occurs in the fall and targets all waterways in the state of Georgia including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches and wetlands. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources through waterway cleanups.
