Redistricting for area North Fulton schools to begin in October

September 09, 2014 NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Parents would be wise to stay aware of school attendance zone changes in the coming months. The redistricting process for all schools throughout North Fulton will begin in October, with the goal to have the changes approved by February and in place next school year, according to officials with the Fulton County School System (FCSS). "The scope of the North Fulton redistricting will include all schools and all levels," said Yngrid Huff, chief planner for the FCSS. "Capacity is being added at the elementary and middle school levels, which requires a holistic look at all attendance boundaries." A new elementary school off Highway 9 in Roswell is set to open in August 2015, along with additions at three North Fulton middle schools – Hopewell, Autrey Mill and Taylor Road. A planned addition at Crabapple Middle was shelved until after 2018 while planners consider a complete rebuild of the school. This increased classroom space provides an opportunity for the FCSS to adjust attendance lines based on enrollment, as well as remedy some of the quirky feeder patters from elementary to middle to high school. The last North Fulton rezoning was in 2011 with the opening of Cambridge High School. Huff said it is time to revisit the lines to ensure capacity is balanced across the region. "We've had some changes since the last redistricting, so we want to make sure everything is aligned," said Huff. "When you look at the entire region, you are able to jiggle all the puzzle pieces at once, and you can better align [the zones]." Huff said the process will also focus on cleaning up feeder patterns, primarily from middle to high school. While it is impossible to have a 100 percent middle school feed into a high school because of space issues, planners will work on reducing small groups of kids who veer off from their classmates to a new school. "The feeder pattern needs to be considered," said Fulton Board member Linda McCain, who represents Johns Creek. "In my area, it's the middle to high school feed my community is most concerned about. The kids are on feeder teams and other clubs, and it gets [complicated]." Board member Katie Reeves of Alpharetta concurred with the need to clean up feeder lines. She pointed out there is not a new high school planned in North Fulton in the near future so this redistricting provides the opportunity to "tweak" the feeder patterns. Although feeder patterns are considered a "secondary criteria" for modifications, there was consensus on the board to weigh it more heavily in some instances. The redistricting process will start in October through a series of community meetings. Feedback and information will be gathered from the community and used to develop maps based on criteria approved by the Fulton County Board of Education. "The first meeting serves as a means to gather specific feedback, which will then allow staff to generate alternative maps for the second and third meetings," explained Huff. "No assumptions should be made on who or what communities will be involved. All residents are invited and encouraged to attend." She noted the meetings will be held in the October through December time frame, with recommendations presented to the board in January for approval in February. Changes will go into effect for the 2015-2016 school year. All meetings will be held at Alpharetta High School, although dates and times have not been finalized. A passerby reported the fire on Crabapple Road just before 3:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from the roof of the two-level structure. Firefighters battling the blaze had to retreat when the roof began to collapse. Several businesses were housed in the building, including Roswell Pediatrics on the first floor and a dental office on the second floor. Smoke billowed well into the morning as fire crews, positioned on ladder trucks, continued to pour water into the building. Alpharetta firefighters were able to salvage two coolers full of vaccines from a room inside Roswell Pediatrics. Office administrator Laurie Viebrock told CBS46 News that the vaccines - thousands of dollars worth - were not damaged. "They went above and beyond," Viebrock said of the firefighters. New Milton library site sits on history
MILTON, Ga. — Milton's new public library will be at the corner of Charlotte Drive and Mayfield Road, in downtown Crabapple. The county paid $1.1 million for the 4.09-acre piece of historic property where the homestead of the Dinsmore family still stands. With a large white house sitting up on a slight rise from the road, there are two barns and a smaller, yellow house on the property. There are plenty of large trees on the property, including two massive oaks. A family of turkey vultures has taken up roost in one of the barns. The Dinsmore farm belonged to Theodore Roosevelt (T.R.) Dinsmore and his wife Imogene. While the white farm house dates back to the 1950's, the property has been in the family for much longer. "You would see [T.R.] sitting on his porch at all times," said Wes Williams, a long-time area resident and real estate agent for the property. At one point, the Dinsmore family owned a large percentage of the Crabapple area, Williams said. T.R. died in 2005 and Imogene died in 2009. Drivers-by might recall that the property has had a "for sale" sign out front for the past several years. Williams and Glenn Fletcher are partners in Carroll Realty, the Realtors who have tried to sell the property for the past seven years. It was slow going, Fletcher said, trying to find the right developer and development for such an important site in Crabapple, especially with the newly formed City of Milton. "This is the last big parcel in Crabapple that wouldn't require an assemblage of lots," said Fletcher. "We went looking for the right fit." They then heard about the $275 million library bond. "When Wes and I happened to along how Fulton County passed their bond and they were looking for a library site, we knew it was a perfect site," said Fletcher. The lot has road visibility and is within walking distance of several schools – Milton High School, Northwestern Middle School and Crabapple Elementary School – all important criteria for site selection by the library board. The realtors reached out to the library director, John Szabo, and invited him to walk the site. This was all in 2008. Two years later, Fletcher, Williams and Williams' 10-year-old daughter, Colleen, went to a Library Board of Trustees meeting to make their case. They think the decision was made easier for the board when young Colleen stood up and wanted to speak. "She told them, 'I think that Charlotte Drive would be a great location for your new library,'" said Williams. "She got up there and was unfazed by the people in the room." The Fulton County Commission voted at their June 6 meeting to approve the $1.1 million to purchase the Dinsmore estate. The motion to approve came from North Fulton Commissioner Liz Hausmann and was unanimously approved. The 25,000-square-foot library is part of 10 new or renovated libraries that were approved in a 2008 referendum worth $275 million, and work has been moving on a few sites since then. The library in Roswell already has preliminary designs drawn up, and the new Alpharetta Library is part of the new designs of downtown Alpharetta. The next step for the library is for architecture and designs to be drawn up. For Fletcher and Williams, it's a perfect fit for Milton. "It's nice to think this piece of property will be the center of learning for young kids," said Fletcher, who also helps teach special needs children at the Old Milton High School. "This is one of the main entrances into Milton," said Williams. "What better way for a city to be represented than a landmark to learning?" Crabapple road plans pondered
Several ideas would divert traffic from problem area by Jonathan Copseywrite the author Traffic in Crabapple is a known headache to those who have to travel through it. Vehicles get backed up significantly as they pass through the tight, one-lane squeeze that is the intersection of Birmingham Highway and Mayfield Road. A community meeting held Sept. 27 at the Alpharetta Community Center was aimed at coming up with solutions to the problem. First is a series of widenings and general improvements to the intersection itself, along with left-turn lanes on three of the four approaches. That's a done deal, said Milton Transportation Director Carter Lucas. "We have money to build that, and one other option," he said. That second option is what the meeting was about. Maps were presented to the public showing three different choices. All involved building new roadways with the eventual aim to create something like a ring road around Crabapple, as was promoted in the master plan created by planner Lew Oliver over the summer. One option links Crabapple Road to Birmingham Highway behind the Olde Blind Dog group of shops, using several of the streets in the unfinished development at the back. This would create new roundabouts at both ends of the road. Another option goes from that roundabout eastward and curves down to intersect with the traffic light at Charlotte Drive. This might also become a roundabout. A third option could go from Mid-Broadwell Road and link up with Birmingham Highway to the south of the intersection. Once a project is settled upon, any construction is still far off – it would be 2014 at the earliest, with a 2016 opening. Crabapple antique fest keeps tradition alive in Milton
Back in the days when you could count the cars coming through this historic community, a festival was begun by Mrs. Statham and Mr. and Mrs. Reeves that has since become the Crossroads at Crabapple Antiques and Art Festival. They owned antique shops and before long other antique shops appeared. With the festival, these pioneers put Crabapple on the map as one of the best places in the country to come for American Country Antiques. No more a sleepy community, Crabapple still retains its historic feel, housing antique, art and gift shops in its 19th century homes, buildings and former cotton gin. New retail buildings under a strict design guideline add the needed amenities for a sustainable, walkable community where everyone feels at home. The spirit of the festival encompasses Crabapple's relaxed atmosphere with roaming musicians, antiques from 50 dealers, artwork and crafts from 50 juried artists. Come and enjoy strolling under 200 year old oaks, down a closed street, and through the hay field for food, fun and great buys. Parking and admission is free for this one day only festival Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are also children's activities at nearby Goddard School from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.cityofmiltonga.us or call 770-448-3860. Construction begins on Crabapple mixed-use development
Construction has started on a site in Crabapple that has been under contract for more than a year with little sign of movement. The lack of activity at the Crabapple Mercantile Exchange prompted gossip that it might be a casualty of the slow economy. But on Wednesday, workers were busy raising steel girders at the site near the corner of Birmingham Highway and Crabapple Road. Developer John Adams said construction was delayed partly because he couldn't get construction loans until he had secured all permits from the city. He received those permits in December, after about a year of negotiating with Milton city officials about the architectural style of the development for the 52,000-square-foot project. Crabapple Mercantile Exchange is designed to reflect 19th century buildings that Adams said will evoke Old World charm. It's time to hang out with your Milton family!
Once again, Michael O'keefe is welcoming the community to his Foster's Grille in Crabapple. He had this to share with us about the anticipated event: "We are excited to be hosting the next Milton nights. The last time we had a full house, with everyone mingling with their friends and neighbors, which is exactly what Foster's Grille is all about. It is our hope that it will be great night of fun and community." Michael will be donating 10% of the evenings numbers to Team In Training which helps raise funds in the fight against leukemia. So bring your family, bring your friends, and bring your business cards!
