Johns Creek PD plans sobriety checkpoints for 4th of July
This Fourth of July, Johns Creek Police will set up sobriety check points in various locations across the City, joining other law enforcement agencies in both state and national impaired driving enforcement initiatives. The check points will be in effect before, during and after the holiday at undisclosed times and places. This is to discourage drivers from drinking and driving. The goal of the enhanced enforcement of DUI laws is to reduce alcohol-related traffic accidents in the City. Officers will use the Department's new portable intoxilyzer trailer, which contains an Intoxilyzer 5000 non-invasive breath alcohol testing machine. The JCPD is one of a few law enforcement agencies in Georgia to have the state-of-the art trailer Labels: 4th of july, city of johns creek, sobriety checkpoints

Johns Creek is state’s wealthiest city
It’s not even 3 years old, but Johns Creek has been ranked the wealthiest city in Georgia and the 95th wealthiest city in the nation. Using census data, the company Bizjournals compared income level, home size and value, number of cars owned, education and other factors to rank Georgia cities. Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said he was proud but not surprised by the ranking for the bedroom community of about 70,000 people. “It’s a nice acknowledgement of the great things we’ve got going in Johns Creek,” he said Monday. The median household income in Johns Creek is $108,416 and the average home price is $335,900. Bizjournals said almost 40 percent of the homes have nine or more rooms and 5 percent of the city’s households have four or more cars. Arlington, Va., was ranked the wealthiest city in the nation and Brownsville, Texas, the poorest. Labels: city of johns creek, Georgia, wealthiest city

Johns Creek kicks off public Greenway project
Construction on the Johns Creek Greenway – a continuous network of trails throughout the City – is scheduled to begin Monday, March 23. A groundbreaking ceremony for Segment 1 of the Greenway (along Medlock Bridge Road from Old Alabama Road to Findley Road) is scheduled for 2:30 pm that afternoon at the start of Segment 1 on the grounds of Perimeter Church. Mayor Mike Bodker and City Council members will join Fulton County Commissioner Lynne Riley, community members of the Fulton County Johns Creek Greenway Master Plan Technical Advisory Committee and representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation, Fulton County Public Works, TSD Engineers, Inc., American Contractor, Inc. and Johns Creek Public Works to launch this important phase of the six-year long project. Greenway discussions began in 2002 with volunteer citizens on the former Johns Creek Greenway Technical Advisory Committee, initiated by the late Fulton County Commissioner Bob Fulton. In November 2008, the City adopted the 2030 Comprehensive Plan, which includes details of the future network of trails and sidewalks in the City. The Segment 1 project will connect existing walkways, which have been built by local developers and entities, such as Perimeter Church, as part of a public/private approach to overall development of the Greenway. Anna Shmukler of TSD Engineers designed the Greenway, American Contractor serves as the contractor and the Georgia Department of Transportation will manage the project. The Greenway Project is funded through Federal Highway Administration funding of 80% of project cost. Johns Creek provides the matching 20% through local tax dollars for the construction phase. The total project costs are $2.4M. Future plans call for the Johns Creek Greenway to connect all current and future City parks, trails in the National Park Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, and greenways and parks of adjacent jurisdictions (city of Alpharetta and Forsyth and Gwinnett counties). Johns Creek bridges can’t handle firetrucks
Undersized and older bridges in Johns Creek are forcing the Fire Department to reroute trucks, adding distance and increasing response times. “A fire can really get going in a minute or two, which puts everyone at risk, citizens and firefighters,” said Fire Chief Joey Daniels. “When we respond to a fire, there’s a lot of things we need to do in a hurry.” Four bridges have been identified as potential problems, all on key routes: two on Medlock Bridge Road; one on Parsons Road; and one on Bell Road. Daniels couldn’t say how much longer it takes to reach particular areas. The Fire Department is tracking response times, he said. The new policy was enacted about a week ago after Daniels and the city Public Works Department queried the state Department of Transportation. “I had concerns about the safety of our trucks traveling over these bridges,” Daniels said. “You don’t want to take a heavy apparatus over a bridge and have it collapse.” The bridges can handle between 15 tons and 30 tons. A fire engine weighs 17.5 tons, and a ladder truck weighs 40 tons. Bolstering and repairing each bridge would cost $2 million to $3 million each, and Johns Creek doesn’t have the cash, said Public Works Director Ken Hildebrandt. He said the city could try for some federal stimulus money. Fire officials in Gwinnett, DeKalb and Cobb counties said their bridges can support their vehicles. “That’s one advantage to being a newly developing county,” said Gwinnett Fire Chief Steve Rolader. Johns Creek Founders Day expanding!
Response to the City of Johns Creek’s first Founders Day celebration marking the anniversary of the City’s incorporation was so overwhelming that organizers are expanding the party to a full week, culminating in the Founders Day Parade on Saturday, Dec. 6. Several thousand people turned out for last year’s event, a day-long affair that featured the parade down State Bridge Road, a visit with Santa at Newtown Park, and culminating with a music and holiday light extravaganza at City Hall featuring performances by students of Johns Creek’s award-winning schools. This year, city officials are spreading out the events and adding even more activities to engage and delight residents young and old. The festivities begin with lighting of the holiday display at City Hall on Monday, December 1. Throughout the week there will be a holiday decoration-making event in conjunction with the Johns Creek Arts Center, the Mayor and City Council will read their favorite holiday tales in local schools, there will be a combination holiday card signing for the troops and Toys for Tots drive at City Hall, and Emory Johns Creek will host a holiday workshop featuring crafts and children’s activities. Details for several of the events are still being worked out, but it’s not too early to make your plans to participate in the Founders Day parade. The first edition drew some 75 entries ranging from the popular Yaarab Shriners to high school marching bands, Scouts, community floats, classic cars and a special appearance by Santa himself. This year, organizers expect over 100 units to take part. If your neighborhood, school or other organization would like to be among them, fill out a parade application and submit it by Nov. 7 to secure your space. The route remains the same, travelling down State Bridge starting from West Morton Road and ending at Kimball Bridge Road at Ocee Elementary School. Emmy Award-winning news anchor and Johns Creek resident Karyn Greer from WXIA 11Alive News will once again serve as emcee. PACT launched: Police and Community Together
"COPS Connect" to communicate/solve crimes In a concerted effort to establish good communications and build mutually trustful and respectful relationships with Johns Creek residents, the Johns Creek Police Department will launch its PACT (Police & Community Together) community policing program this fall. The goal of PACT is for police and residents to work together to solve crimes, identify underlying problems in neighborhoods to prevent future crimes, and clarify any misinformation about alleged criminal incidents. A PACT officer will be assigned to each residential neighborhood or HOA subdivision as a point of contact, meeting on a regular basis with homeowners to discuss any law enforcement concerns. An email database for representatives of each of the City's 249 subdivisions will be used to distribute monthly "COPS Connect" newsletters and any necessary crime e-alerts. Residents can also sign up to receive "COPS Connect" as one of their City e-communications. Questions regarding PACT should be addressed to Sgt. Debbie Kalish at 678-474-1587 or Community Services.
