The days of a mailbox at the end of each driveway in Alpharetta neighborhoods may be numbered. The United States Postal Service is implementing a policy establishing central delivery as the mode for all new buildings, including in single-family residential neighborhoods. It is the hope of the USPS this effort will minimize costs associated with delivering mail.
“It costs more to deliver door to door,” said Michael Miles, Communications Manager for the United States Postal Service Atlanta District. “The post officer receives no taxpayer dollars. We’re always looking to reduce cost.
“[The program] has been rolling out across most of the country for many years now. Door to door delivery is something that we haven’t readily been doing since the late ’70s.”
Central delivery involves the delivery of mail into Centralized Box Units (CBUs), similar to those found in most apartment complexes.
