Ninth-graders at three North Fulton high schools can remain at their current schools next year rather than be redistricted if they have their own transportation to and from school, the school board decided Thursday.
A new high school opening in the Johns Creek area in August will draw students from the current Chattahoochee, Northview and Alpharetta high school districts. In the past, only rising juniors and seniors could choose to stay at their current school when a new school opened.
District 2 school board member Katie Reeves, who represents the high schools affected, suggested the idea. “For some students, the transition from middle to high school can be overwhelming,” Reeves said. “The thought of yet another transition so soon causes concern for some parents.”
In the future, the board may revisit its policy when new high schools open.
Parents who oppose the plan have said it will make traffic worse in the area and divide close-knit neighborhoods.
The new high school is expected to have an enrollment of 1,797.
