In the words of Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, hopefully the first time you encounter the newly formed Johns Creek Police Department, it won't be with blue lights flashing in your rearview mirror.
Speeding tickets aside, the city's police department officially took to the streets April 27, 18 months after Johns Creek became a city.
Fulton County Police Department has been serving the Johns Creek area for more than 30 years.
"This is a huge step for the city," said Bodker. "There isn't a more proud moment for me…watching the cars out on the street for the first time. It's a great feeling knowing citizens will be greatly served as well as businesses."
Amid blue flashing lights and the sound of a bagpipe, residents, city staff, community leaders and dozens of police officers gathered for the inaugural ceremony April 26 at police headquarters to welcome aboard 56 law enforcement officers. The city officially "cut ties" with Fulton County Police Department through a ribbon cutting ceremony at the event.
"To be part of the inaugural squad is not only exciting, but we're trying to set a standard," said Cpl. Min Cha. "The first priority is to get the community to know us."
He added that residents can expect more patrol through neighborhoods.
"It's exciting," said Councilman Ivan Figueroa. "It's part of the reason we became a city." Police Chief Ed Densmore said through all of the anticipation, it's a sense of relief to be able to have officers hit the streets and do what they know best.
"I feel like an 8-year-old at Christmas," said Densmore.
He added that officers will focus on patrolling neighborhoods, parks and the business community.
"The interaction with the community is key," said Densmore.
Police officers have spent several weeks preparing for the department's launch through various training exercises and programs.
