Frigid temperatures have sent many in Metro Atlanta scrambling for supplies to get through the cold snap Wednesday night.
Home improvement stores said big sellers included space heaters, outdoor faucet covers, pipe insulation and kerosene heating oil.
Home experts said it is important to let faucets drip slowly during extremely cold temperatures to prevent pipes from bursting. To conserve water and prevent freezing pipes catch the water from faucets to reuse, insulate pipes, seal any leaks and turn off the faucets when temperature rises.
Auto repair shops said it is also important to check belts, hoses and the battery to make sure cars are protected against freezing weather.
While the weather may be hard on pipes and cars, it can also be hard on people.
Former television reporter turned U.S. Senate candidate Dale Cardwell endured the cold perched 300 feet above the ground on the Corey Tower, a former steam power plant chimney. Cardwell vowed to stay on top of the tower until he got his campaign message across.
For Atlanta's homeless community, the extreme temperatures can be dangerous.
Shelter operators said in the last year, there have been at least 20 deaths of homeless people due to weather.
Hundreds have gone to homeless shelters in Atlanta. At the Task Force for the Homeless, officials said there was enough room for 1,000 people.
Volunteers handed out blankets at a downtown park Wednesday night and encouraged the homeless to seek shelter.
