Fulton Schools make President's speech optional
by Staff reportsSeptember 04, 2009
Fulton County Schools that plan to show President Barack Obama's speech on Tuesday were instructed to allow parents to let their children skip watching the speech.
On Sept. 8, the President will host a special webcast directed to schoolchildren.
A notice on the school system's Web site (www.fultonschools.org/story_detail_masterdata.asp?id=2470) said the system focuses on instruction and teaching the state's new curriculum, so that students can achieve – and exceed – their personal and educational goals.
"Daily instructional time is a precious resource; therefore, schools are under no obligation to watch the address, either through the webcast or on C-SPAN," the notice stated.
A school planning to show the broadcast was to notify parents ahead of time, plus provide an opportunity to opt out their students through a form on the Web site. The school system notice stated that "although suggested lesson plans have been shared, they will not be used since they are not a part of the required state curriculum. No child will be penalized if he or she does not participate in the broadcast."
Families can decide to watch the President's speech with their children outside of the school day as it is expected to be available at (www.whitehouse.gov and www.c-span.org Web sites after the broadcast.
